Introduction | After 100 years of the theory of general relativity, the gravitational wave was detected on September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. Based on the observation, scientists estimated that the event was created the collision of a pair of blackholes, of masses about 29 and 36 times the solar mass, and the event took place 1.3 billion years ago. In this colloquium, we have invited Dr Shiuh Chao (趙 煦), Professor of the Institute of Photonics Technologies of NTHU and Scientist of the LIGO collaboration team, to tell us about this exciting discovery. Prof Chong-Sun Chu will cover some of the theoretical background about general relativity and gravitational wave. Schedule: 1.15-1.45: Introduction to General Relativity and Gravitational Wave, by Prof Chu 1.45-2.15: Introduction to Laser Interference Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Its recent discovery, by Prof Chao. Colleagues, researchers, students and interested parties are all welcome. Registration is required if you would like to have lunch with us. |
