Abstract:
The classical conformal invariance of Maxwell theory prevents photons from directly experiencing cosmological particle production.
However, gravitons are not subject to the same disability, and a huge ensemble of them is produced during primordial inflation.
We show how scattering by these gravitons leads to the production of photons and also to secular changes in the electrodynamic force laws.
Examination of the gauge issue also prompts a proposal for partially resolving the issue of cosmological observables.
